The California Band Alumni Association (CBAA) has selected Pedro “Pete” Alvarez, Jr. (trombone ’71) as this year’s recipient of the Tony Martinez Memorial Service Award. This award — which is presented every two years — is given to a Cal Band alum for his or her sustained service to the Band, the CBAA, and the University.
Pete joined the Cal Band in September 1971 and, after a grueling week of the Fall Training Program, knew he would be a lifer. During that week, Pete was introduced to the history, traditions, and hard work that had gone into making Cal Band “The Pride of California.” Pete wanted to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors. He greatly admired the work of Tony Martinez and hoped to emulate him.
Pete began his work as Alumni Assistant end zone director while on the 1976 Bicentennial Tour. Upon return, Bob Briggs invited Pete to continue in that role for the fall season, and has done so ever since. Pete is truly honored and grateful to be associated with The Pacesetter of College Marching Bands these past 41 season, and hopes to continue to do so in the future.
Congratulate Pete at the Cal Band Alumni Reunion on Friday, November 18 at Spenger’s in Berkeley. All Cal Band alumni are heartily welcome to attend. This is a non-performing event that happens only every other year, so we hope you will join us. The Straw Hat Band stops by for an extended performance and is known to take requests and ask Student Director alumni to direct!
The Tony Martinez Memorial Service Award was created by the Cal Band Alumni Association in the mid-1990s to recognize Band Alumni who have made long-term, significant contributions to the Cal Band and/or to band alumni programs. The award is named for Tony Martinez (clarinet ’49, Drum Major ’51), whose lifelong relationship with the Cal Band is credited with helping the Band raise its stature to national significance. The award is given biannually at the Cal Band Reunion, held the Friday night before Big Game.
To quote the Cal Band History Book, The Pride of California: “Tony Martinez, elected Drum Major of the Cal Band in the fall of 1951, was probably the single most influential person in the Band’s move from a very good West Coast band to one of national stature. Following the 1950 Rose Bowl, he met members of the Ohio State and Michigan bands and discussed technique and style. The Band consulted him throughout the 1950s as it struggled to improve its level of performance. After graduation, Tony continued a life-long relationship with the Cal Band, designing and charting its shows until his death in 1990.”
